 A Story of Overcoming Odds.

A Tribeca Studios Production in partnership with ServiceNow, [Alt] Shift Life is more than a film—it’s a powerful testament to human resilience. Directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Laura Checkoway, this moving documentary follows three extraordinary individuals who refused to let their circumstances define them. Against the odds, they found their way into tech, reshaping their futures and proving that when opportunity meets determination, anything is possible.

The Stories That Inspired Us

Scott - A Tennessee native born with cerebral palsy, fighting to build a better future.

DeVonn - A man from the Bronx, driven by the desire to break his family’s cycle of poverty.

Sai - A young woman from a small village in India, determined to carve her own path and achieve financial independence.

Each of them defied the odds. Each of them proved that potential is universal—and we believe opportunity should be too.

The Movement Behind the Film

By 2028, the U.S. will face 1.76 million unfilled IT jobs. Satisfying the demand for talent will require extensive reskilling and upskilling programs to help non-tech workers make the transition to lucrative roles in the digital economy. In response to this looming shortage, RiseUp with ServiceNow is on a mission to upskill one million people worldwide. Through training, mentorship, and direct career pathways, RiseUp with ServiceNow provides opportunities for those traditionally excluded from the tech industry.

From India to the Bronx to rural Tennessee, these stories illustrate how access and belief in oneself can change everything. These individuals come from different countries, ages, genders, and backgrounds, each facing unique challenges as they overcome obstacles to forge their paths in the tech industry.

  • Scott, born with cerebral palsy to biological parents battling addiction, never imagined he’d escape poverty—until he did.

  • DeVonn, an introverted, self-described “computer-obsessed nerd” from the Bronx, shattered generational barriers and built a sustainable career in IT.

  • Sai, a young woman from a small Indian village, defied tradition to pursue her dream of independence in Bangalore’s tech industry.

[Alt] Shift Life is more than a documentary. It’s a call to action. It’s proof that when we invest in people, they rise up.
